West of Havana is an Adventure Romance set in Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas in 1972. Jake Pepper, living on the shores of Lake Okeechobee Florida, salvages a wrecked sailboat. He repairs the yacht and with a crew of several friends strikes out to seek a hidden treasure in Cuba. Maya, the beautiful Cuban American friend volunteers to accompany Jake and act as interpretor for the expedition. The romance that occurs during the voyage simmers and boils as the adventure unfolds. Casto's communist government guards Cuban waters against incursions by American boats. Jake develops a plan to illegally slip into a hidden cove on Cuba's northern coast. From there he plans to go inland to seek the buried fortune. Jake and his crew are tested by encounters with Cuban gunboats and military as well as Jamaican drug traffickers and the wrath of Hurricane Agnes. A stuggle of emotions plague Jake and Maya as both mature and grow on this epic adventure.

Once again, I bought this book because I know the author, and when a friend writes a book, you buy it. But beyond the sense of obligation, I bought this book because VH has always been a great story teller, and I've always known he had a great book in him. West of Havana is it. And I hope it's the first of many.I don't want to mischaracterize this book as young adult - it's not - but it is an adventure tale in the spirit of Treasure Island or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It's also a story of inward exploration, chronicling the character's struggle with the transition into adulthood and carving out a path to authenticity. A hero with insecurities and flaws, but above all, character.
If you're looking for a great story you've never heard before, and a main character you've never seen, I think you'll like West of Havana. And if you want to conjure childhood adventures long forgotten, and adventures you simply wished you had, you'll love this book. Highly recommended.

Read this book and you will not be disappointed . The story moves along quite nicely with strong character development. The author is obviously a great story teller as he draws the reader into the life growing experiences of the main character, Jake. I enjoyed seeing Jake mature and develop in a short period of time into a true leader.
I found this book to be quite entertaining and hope that the author V.H. Morgan gives us another adventure very soon.

West of Havana by V H Morgan will keep you up nights! You tag along with Jake and his faithful dog, Huck, as they wade through the seamy side of Cuba’s drug world in a self-salvaged 1940’s Sparkman Stevens designed sloop. Morgan’s tale touches all the bases a boy, his dog, a sailboat navigating dangerous waters, dodging bullets, and a sexy frustrating love triangle! A must read for sailors or anyone who loves mysteries.
