PRIME CUT ADVICE.

John Bichelmeyer dispensed much more than ground beef and bacon to his customers. A man with only an eighth-grade education and father of 10 children, he offered rare wisdom and compassion to his clientele, friends and family that came from the heart.

Now his daughter, Mary B. Lucas, B.D., tells the story of how she earned her B.D. (which stands for "butcher's daughter") by spending hours at the butcher-block table in the family kitchen, listening to her father's stories about how he achieved success by making deep connections with the people around him. In turn, Mary used her father's advice to find the passion and perseverance to rise to the top of the staffing industry.

As John used to say, "Remember to put the `comeback sauce' on everyone you meet." In Lunch Meat & Life Lessons Sharing a Butcher's Wisdom, Mary offers a healthy dose of that sauce, which will empower everyone who reads this book to reach their full potential.

I read this book because it's about the Bichelmeyer Meats in KCK where I grew up. I have been going to this butcher since I was a we little girl. I loved this book. I gave a copy to my father in law for fathers day (who had no idea who/what Bichelmeyer's was), but the story is inspiring. Father in law LOVED it. He is a retired principal and to quote him: If I was still a principal today, I would have purchased a copy for each one of my teachers and handed it out to them. There is a lot to learn from this man. You don't have to know anything about our fair city, or the Bichelmeyer name, but you absolutely need to read and find more out about the "Come Back Sauce".

Lunchmeat Life Lessons Sharing a Butcher Wisdom edition by Mary B Lucas SelfHelp eBooks Reviews

I love this book--highly entertaining and full of life lessons--the only book that is better is The Word of God, the Bible. BIBLE stands for "Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth". Read the gospel of John for some encouragement.
I read this as a library book and knew my daughter would like it, so I bought a copy for her. I haven't heard yet if she's liking it.
she loved it
This book was recommended to me by one of my mentors and I must say it was one of the best things she could have done for me along my journey to be a nursing leader. The butchers wisdom is far and above some of the greatest, proven many times over by those much more educated. The difference is it is learned by real life, by dealing with actual people on a day to day basis and learning how to be an honest person to yourself-and those you serve. One could only wish for a father to teach life lessons such as these. Thank you Ms. Lucas for inviting us into your kitchen to sit with you and your dad-it was an honor!
Mary was a speaker at a luncheon I attended and she is such a natural story teller. She comes from a very real family and the lessons her father passed along are incredible and you can tell her dad was a wise, salt of the earth individual. I have passed it along to other as it is a quick, easy read. I enjoyed it very much.
I can not express how much I enjoyed this book! It not only touched me on a professional level, but a personal one as well.

From a Professional prospective, having worked in the staffing industry for 28 years in Atlanta, I could certainly relate to everything Mary wrote beginning with her very first day! Over the years I taught several Customer Service classes for the whole Region and worked with individual branches as well. I was given the book to read from a colleague just before leaving Atlanta and I suggested my company purchase this book for EVERY branch across the country. It was so easy to read and makes the whole concept of customer service an easily obtainable objective. Although I have moved across the country to pursue a lifelong dream working for a non-profit organization, I will be working in Special Projects, one of which includes putting together a training program for the over 30,000 volunteers that come to the organization every year. Included in this project will be training for employees on how important the volunteers are to the organization and how to ensure their visit is as rewarding as possible. The information in this book will be invaluable.

From a very personal standpoint, reading about Mary's father and her special relationship with him affected me deeply. My father, who passed away 10 years ago, was a wonderful teacher and a trusted friend. He instilled in me a great sense of responsibility, a respect for all individuals and the importance of leading a moral, caring and humane life. I miss him everyday.

I thank you very much for this wonderful "feel good" story
At the end of her book, author Mary Lucas writes "I decided to do something that I would be proud of and that I knew both my father and mother would be proud of me for doing. I decided to write this book. In order to help me get inspired again and to help others inspire themselves." I'd say she's right on target.

John Bichelmeyer--the author's father--is introduced as a lifelong butcher lacking in formal education, but rich in wisdom. While Ms. Lucas places her father's advice in the context of business, anything in this book can be applied to your personal character outside the workplace. She conveniently summarizes the main quotes in large boxes throughout the book. Readers will be able to find some useful life lessons, courtesy of Mr. Bichelmeyer, that will improve themselves and their happiness.

One piece of advice I especially enjoyed was, "Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?" In other words, what may seem to be rotten luck may actually turn out to be a good thing in the end. Another one I was inspired by was, "Learn something from every person you meet." My take on this is that there are seven billion people out there, each with something different to teach you. Perhaps this is something to keep in mind the next time you interact with people from various backgrounds.

If you're looking for a spark of inspiration, some wisdom to improve your personal or professional life, or maybe just a little advice to improve your happiness, you can't go wrong with "Lunchmeat and Life Lessons." Invest a couple of hours in this book, and you may find some unique perspective from the late Mr. Bichelmeyer that you won't hear from anywhere else.
